Here at last is a sneak-peek look at the cover of the 6th Faerie Path book: The Charmed Return, hot off the presses, as people used to say.
For anyone not yet in the know, the book is due out towards the end of January 2011. At the end of 2010, I am planning on posting some sneak peeks of the book online, so watch out for them in Nov/Dec.
Meanwhile, I have been asked if I’d be prepared to post some riddles based on the storylines in The Charmed Return.
here are the rules of the following riddles:
There are no rules except for the ones that I make up as I go along. If you work out the whole plot from these riddles and ask me if you have got it right I may say “yes” or I may say “no” or I may say “no comment”. I may give further hints, or suggestions based on questions you ask, but I may not tell the truth, or I may tell the truth, or I may say “no comment”. (I’m not about to give the whole plot away for everyone just because some of you are really really good at this kind of thing.) The riddles are all based on true things in the book - none of the riddles are untrue.
Okay: here goes.
1,2 & 4 are trapped in amber.
3 is no more, alas, but why do birds flock around the Dolorous Tower?
5 arrives, but can 5 really be alive?
6 and a boy appear when they jump through a hoop - but which of 2 boys and how are they here?
7 is half lost, but the Green Girl will help 7 to reunite.
The formula for the return:
TFP (221+4=T)=TLQ (135+11=A)=(181+24=G)=(248+7=F)
The answer is: 4 of 7.
5 of 7 is 50% TA+50%AP. In other words, 1 of 7 and 5 of seven are the same power twice over.
6 of 7 and 7 of 7 are hidden in TCR.
Together these 7 will make a new Power of Seven.
The Solution:
When Brother cries Uncle all evil is done - so why are the horses still galloping from the North, and who is the new Captain of Weir?
And if all is well, what does this mean: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_World%27s_End_(Camden)
That’s it.
For those who enjoy this kind of thing, happy puzzling.
This is so much fun! The cover looks AMAZING!! Thanks so much for taking the time to make this riddle, Mr. Jones!! I THINK I’ve got part of it, but I’m not going to say anything yet.
I love the cover! Ugh! I don’t like riddles, but I am going to try to do it!
Are we allowed to say our guesses here?
AFJ. Shannon - if you guess the whole plot absolutely correctly, then, no, I probably won’t want you to post it here. But by all means leave your comments in the usual way - if I spot one that gives the whole game away I’ll take it offline and contact the writer personally - and if someone does get it right, I’ll probably let them have a signed copy of the book when it comes out - so long as they keep the secret! And don’t forget, you can always go to the Contact page if you want to send me a message that won’t appear here.
i officaily have a head ache, but im gonna get a pen and papper and work until i get it! im not giving up!
i searched http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_World%27s_End_(Camden) online and it came up on widipedia talking about how the World’s End is said to be the largest pub in Europe, its located in England so im guessing that pub is going to have something to do in the book?
i think i have some of it figuered out:
Eden, Hopie, and Sacha are trapped in amber prisons, Codelia is dead and birds are morning for her at teh Dolorous Tower, Zara is back, Rathina and Edric go through a portal like the one in Eden’s tower, Taina is half lost because she is half Anita, Zara is only half there and Eden brought her there, Rathina and Taina ar hidding in TCR. i dont know what TCR means but i think it is a place. some of that may be wrong but it is my best guess
i have more to add to my guess
here is what i think:
the part that says, “TFP (221+4=T)=TLQ (135+11=A)=(181+24=G)=(248+7=F)” i have figured out, TFP stands for The Faerie Path and when you look at the page number 221 it is Sancha living the death of Tania when she first dies thats why there is a =T then TLQ stands for The Lost Queen and on the different page numbers she is Ann then Gracie then Flora the only part i dont get is why there is the +4 +11 +24 and +7. i also think that when it says “The answer is: 4 of 7.” that it means that Taina needs to find out what happened in her past lives in the 500 year gap to get home and only Sancha can figure that out, and i figured out that TCR stants for The Charmed Return so that means that Taina and Ratina are hiddin in the book not in a spacific place… mabey they are hidding in a pub?? i think what “When Brother cries Uncle all evil is done - so why are the horses still galloping from the North, and who is the new Captain of Weir?” means is when Oberon’s brother Nargostrond or Lear who sent the plague surrenders then all the evil will be over and that mabey some one evil is now the Captain of Weir so the horses are either running away or charging. thats all i got
oh also the Harper was first seen by Tania in a bar so mabey she will se him again in a bar? i still havnt figured that out…
Wow! The Cover is simply beautiful… Lovely.
That is my FAVORITE cover. Man it’s been a while. I’ve been at Band Camp. Man, it’s hot outside.
I am thinking Hollin is the new Captain of Weir. I know that he could be anywhere/dead, I just have a feeling it is him.
i think your right Hannah good thinking
I think that Jade is the Green Girl who helps Tania to unite, because jade is a shade of green and I think it was hinted that she would be in the charmed return
I think I have the first part.
1, 2, and 4 are Eden Hopie and Cordelia each ‘trapped’ in their own way by the sickness (Eden’s husband, Hopie with her medicine, and Cordelia’s sick). 5 is Zara, 6 is Rathina along with either Connor or Edric going to the Mortal world, and 7 is obviously a conflicted Tania.
ok, i’ve been working at this for a little over a day now. and here’s what i hav so far (sorry, it’s long)…
Well, from what I’ve figured out (I think)…
I agree with the ideas about Eden, Hopie, and Sancha being trapped in either the amber prisons, or possibly the Gildensleep in either the golden cocoon itself or fully focused in their work at curing the illness.
And as far as ”3 is no more, alas, but why do birds flock around the Dolorous Tower?” Cordelia is still contained in the power of the Gildensleep and before she was incased in it, Hopie commented that the sickness has set her inner animal spirit loose. So she’s not her old self any more. And that the birds flock the tower because they’re her animals and stay with her to keep her company (?)
But I went to the link “http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_World%27s_End_(Camden)” and it talked about how the basement of the pub was haunted, could that possibly be where they meet Zara (5) again? And the Green Girl could be Jade taking Tania to the pub, “7 is half lost, but the Green Girl will help 7 reunite.” Reunite with her sister’s spirit maybe?
“TFP (221+4=T)=TLQ (135+11=A)=(181+24=G)=(248+7=F)”, the parts of the equation after the TLQ (on pages 135, 181, 248) the A is for Ann, the G is for Gracie, and the F is for Flora, 3 of her past lives. The only thing is that “TFP (221+4=T)” doesn’t fallow the pattern. So I was thinking maybe the T on page 221 might mean Tania? Because that was the book where she figured out who she really is? And “The answer is 4 of 7” would be Sancha, in book 1, helped show Tania one of her past lives so she could help her with figuring out the rest? I still have no idea what the +4, +11, +24, +7 is for.
The “5 of 7” I know is Zara, and I know that the “50%TA+50%AP” is half Tania Aurealis and half Anita Palmer, but then how they go together confuses me… “5 of 7 is 50% TA+50%AP” How Zara is half of Tania/Anita? And then “In other words, 1 of 7 and 5 of seven are the same power twice over.” 1 of 7 is Eden, and once again 5 of 7 is Zara. But I have yet to figure out “The same power twice over.” Possibly when/if Tania gets back to Faerie, if they bring Zara back with her then Eden could use her Mystic Arts to bring Zara back (?) making, “Together these 7 will make a new Power of Seven.”
“When Brother” (?) Nargostrond - Prince Lear Aurealis - Oberon’s brother, “cries Uncle all evil is done - so why are the horses still galloping from the North, and who is the new Captain of Weir?“
And that’s what I’ve got so far! Anyone want to add anything I left out?
Mr. Jones you havent commented on any of our guesses so does that mean you have “no comment” for all of them?
AFJ. Not at all, Liz! I was just waiting for a few more comments before I weighed in. Give me a couple of days and I’ll comment on everything said so far. I’m on holiday right now, so be patient, please, till Tuesday or Wednesday. And I’ll try not to make my comment “no comment”.
Wow the cover is beautiful! Can’t wait to read it!!!
ok sorry to bug you i was just wondering
Well, i think i have some of it… (its not in any particular order, to be warned…)
oh well. im sure book 6 will be a great one!
I think Eden, Hopie and Sancha are either sick by working so hard or actually sick themselves by the plague sent by Nargostrond. I think the new Captain of Wier has gotta be Edric, Because personally, in the 5th book, he seemed to act so different ever since he became loyal to the House of Weir and got into the Dark Arts thing. Of course, when Tania went to the Green Lady to get Edric back, he did seem to act more like himself when Tania won him back. I really dont like Connor, no offense, but i cant help but think he was the boy who went through the hoop with #6, obviously rathina. Im not sure if the green girl is Jade or not ever since book 2 when Tania couldnt go to Flordia with her, but who knows? For 5, i think Zara ended up a lot like Tania, who forgot all about her Faerie self and was at the pub from the link given exactly at the time Tania was there (Im just guessing tania went to the pub) perhaps with jade/green girl.im no good at math, so im sort of gonna let that part pass. For 3 or Cordelia, i think people and the animals think shes dead but really not… anyway. Im probably wrong on this, and i know its probably confusing, but thats pretty much all ive got
Out of interest, will this be the last Fearie Path book? I LOVE this series and i need to prepared if #6 is the last one
lol
AFJ. Hey - Liz! You people never bug me - I enjoy every single comment you all make and every single email you send via the contact page!
Samantha - I think The Charmed Return will probably be the final book in the series - unless hundreds of you people gang together and send letters to the publisher demanding more, of course!
This can’t be the last book.
I’ve read all of them at least three times, and I’m waiting for the new one.
It would be a sad time if that were the last Faerie Path book..
I’m confused, and you all are really good at riddles
is Sancha the 4th sister or 3rd sister (eldest sister being 1, youngest 7)?
AFJ. The sisters ages go like this: Eden is 24. Hopie is 22. Cordelia is 19. Sancha is 18. Both Zara and Rathina are 17 - although one is almost 18 and the other is only just 17. Tania is 16.
Thanks
By the way, I love the cover. Is it a picture or a drawing, do you know?
In the book ‘The Immortal Realm’ it says that Cordelia is the 4th daughter. I think it’s on page 7.
AFJ. SM - yes, I know about that. It was a mistake by me - I kept getting Sancha and Cordelia mixed up - sorry about that! the list of ages above is the final and correct one!
1. Eden - husband is sick
2. Hopie - seeking a cure
3. Cordelia - sick - animal spirit is wild and birds flock to the tower she is in. She is no longer herself
4. sancha - seeking a cure - helps Tania find out about her past lives
5. Zara - dead - is in spirit form?
6. Rathina - quest
7. Tania - quest - lost to the mortal realm were she gets help from her sisters and the green girl (Jade?) to reunite her past lives to reenter
theimortal realm and take her mother and fathers place on the trowen?
Tania’s 5 child has the same power as eden?
tania and her 6 child are Hidden in the charmed return?
the old seven will have seven daughters that will make a new power of 7?
She names her daughters after her past lives?
Rathina and connor go back to the mortal realm and convice antia that she really is tania.
Connor becomes the new evil, he has betrayed them once already. after the uncle( Oberon’s brother Nargostrond or Lear) is defeated.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_World%27s_End_(Camden) = the place where antia rediscovers that she really is tania with the help of the green girl and her sisters and connor( only because she trusts him)
I can’t wait for the book. Do you have an agent that found your publishing company?
What email address should we send all of our encouragements to continue the series too? Should we all choose one day and jam their mail box?
Ps. These are my all time favourite books!!
AFJ. Br Hansen - lists of Literary Agents can be found online - you just want to make sure you find one who deals with the genre in which you work. My Agent lives and works in London, England - and you would want one who lives and works near your home - or at the very least, in the same country.
Laura - I don’t think we want to clog their system - that’s not going to make them like us very much! Emails are very easy to delete - hard copy letters have far more impact - firstly because it proves the sender is interested enough to print out a letter and pay the cost of mailing it - and secondly because it’s not so easy to get rid of or ignore a pile of letters as it is to ignore or delete emails.
Good point, while I guess their going to be seeing some Canadian stamps then.
And Amercican stamps!
Sounds good, and hopefully many other places
Thanks. I’ll do that. How did you make your website?
AFJ. B.L.H. - a friend who is very savvy with computers set it up for me - and the Sundered Lands website was constructed and designed by a professional company in the UK.
Cool. Who did the art work for over beautiful covers? I am writing a book that I plant to put into chapters. Do you have any advise for me? Did you have your chapters be about five to six pages long?
AFJ - if you mean the Faerie Path covers, they were commissioned by the Publisher Harper Collins, but I cannot find out who the model was - the designer’s name, I think, is somewhere on the dust jacket of the covers.
Did you send a query letter or a proposal to get your books published? I also want to be a published writer one day.
Will your book become a movie? I would like to see it as a movie.
I also plan to do a book series about sea people. Is your book going to become a movie? I hope it well.
Is Tania your main character? I have four main characters who are girls.
What century or time is it in the immortal realm of faerie?
AFJ. B.L.H.: The usual method is to pick a publisher who publishes books in the genre in which you have written, then write a polite introductory letter to them, telling them a little about yourself and outlining the salient points of the plot in as brief and interesting a way as you can. Then you ask if they would be prepared to read it for you. Possibly, you could include a small sample of your writing - perhaps pick the scene you think is the most interesting - but no more than five or six pages. You could send this off to up to about three publishers at a time to increase your chances. Alternatively, you could try to find a Literary Agent - you will probably be able to track some down online - and send them the same letter and writing sample as you would to a publisher. Sometimes it is easier to get an Agent interested, and if they take you on, they will help you get to a publisher.
AFJ. B.L.H. - I’d like it to be a movie, but that’s up to the big movers and shakers in the movie industry. Fingers crossed!
AFJ. Anyone out there like to give B.L.H. an answer on her last two questions?
